RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, November 18, 2024 —Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority (RRHA) is tackling the city’s affordable housing crisis by hosting a “Meet and Lease Housing Fair, Friday, November 22, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Calhoun Family Investment Center, 436 Calhoun Street, Richmond VA 23220. The event is designed to bring landlords who have available units to lease in the city of Richmond, VA. face to face with more than 500 voucher holders to make a connection.
“RRHA is committed to do our part to ensure our Housing Choice Voucher Program is successful and that landlords who partner with us have access to ready renters. Under my vision and leadership, we will be totally reforming our approach to partnering with our landlords and delivering measurable results. When RRHA is successful, our landlords are successful. And RRHA voucher holders get the quality housing they need. This event will bring both parties to the table with the intention and anticipated outcome of getting individuals housed. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about,” said RRHA CEO Steven Nesmith.“
Fatimah Smothers-Hargrove, Vice President of RRHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program and Tenant Selection Office said, “This event welcomes both current RRHA landlords and also new landlords who want to partner with RRHA. Our hope is that families will leave with a new home and landlords will come away with units leased.”
Under RRHA’s Housing Choice Voucher Program (commonly referred to as Section 8), landlords who partner with the Housing Authority receive a guaranteed monthly rental subsidy that assists low-income families, the elderly and people with disabilities with rental assistance. Through this program, landlords are able to select eligible tenants utilizing their own screening criteria.
RRHA is making progress on a number of other fronts to counter the lack of affordable housing. New Orleans based developer; HRI Communities has been selected for the redevelopment of Gilpin Court, RRHA’s largest public housing community. Phase B of Creighton Court recently closed, and vertical construction will begin following excavation and infrastructure work, and RRHA continues the intake of qualified public housing residents and voucher holders for our “ComeHome” Homeownership Program.
